The Convention on the Rights of the Child is a monumental milestone in guaranteeing universal rights for children. 2019 marked the 30th anniversary of charter. Coincidentally, this was also the year of a pivotal presidential election for Sri Lanka. With the backdrop of the 30th anniversary of the CRC, UNICEF wanted to get the presidential candidates to make a commitment to make children’s issues a priority in their election mandate.

To achieve this objective, we crafted a campaigned called “ara mage wade” (what about my request?); a term people often use to get favours done on the sly from people in high offices. In our campaign the twist was instead of adults asking for favours, it was the kids who were asking the politicians as to the status of their requests – on issues such as education, malnutrition and poverty.
